'Parent Academy' Offers West Islip Parents Insight Into Common Core

Workshop aimed at educating parents about the state's common core standards set for Tuesday.

The West Islip School District will host a "Parent Academy" focused on the Common Core Standards Tuesday.

The workshop is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Beach Street cafeteria.

Bernadette Burns, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction will give an introduction, and then parents will break off into smaller groups focused on reading, writing, vocabulary and Go Math! series.

The event is designed to give parents a better understanding of the new state standards and the changes in what their children are learning and how it is taught across the district.
