Outgoing Superintendent Welcomes Parents, Students to New Year

Retiring school chief notes new district leadership in welcoming letter.

With just under two weeks before the school doors open and two months left in his tenure, the West Islip school district superintendent has posted a letter of welcome to students and parents.

The letter written by Superintendent Richard Simon, which is posted on the district's website, notes the work done over the summer to get the building's ready for a new school year and also mentions recent administration changes.

Simon announced his intention to retire as school chief last April.

Bernadette Burns, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will become the superintendent as of October 1.

On August 1, Dr. Anne Rullan joined the district as the incoming assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Rullan served as the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction K-12 in the Three Village District and has been an elementary principal in two districts.
