Local Officials, Parents Applaud New Traffic Light

New light touted as a safety enhancement for students walking to West Islip High School.

A new traffic light installed where Barberry Road and Wagstaff Lane intersect Montauk Highway is now operational.

According to State. Sen. Phil Boyle, R-Bay Shore, state funding was secured for the installation of traffic lights at this intersection near West Islip High School. The area has been the site of accidents in which students were injured while walking to school.

“The safety of students who live south of Montauk Highway and travel to and from West Islip High School each day has been a top priority for me,” said Boyle. “I am pleased to be joined by Christine Shaw and Christopher Wilson, both having suffered injuries due to accidents at this intersection, to applaud the new traffic lights that provide a safer crossing for West Islip High School students and others in the community.”

Suffolk County Legis. Thomas Barraga, R-West Islip, added, “It is important for the safety of our children that this light was installed. We have students crossing at this intersection every day to go to school and we need them to know their safety is our number one priority.”
