Islip Town Honors West Islip Robotics Team

Team demonstrates why they took first place at recent tournament.

The members of the West Islip High School Robotics Team recently won the first place trophy at the Half Hollows Hills Invitational Robotics Tournament, beating 27 other teams in a series of robotics competitions.

The Robotechs, as the West Islip team is known, battled to be the most successful at shooting Frisbees into selected targets, climbing a jungle gym style pyramid, and defending their end of the competition field.

The team was recently invited to a Town of Islip Board meeting to illustrate their achievements.

“These students represent the intellectual and competitive spirit that all true innovators possess,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr.

“We’re honoring the Robotechs to inspire other students to apply themselves and become better at whatever passion they have.”

The students labored for months on the robot, turning in two hours after school every day and six hours every Saturday to ensure that their robot, nicknamed Bernoulli, was ready to compete.
