Fire Island Students Honor 9-11 With Special Lesson

Special program included artwork and literacy lessons.

Fire Island School District students and staff members took time this
September to honor the 9-11 anniversary.

The students first listened as a teacher read the story “14 Cows for America,” and then collectively discussed its message: there is no nation so powerful it cannot be wounded, or a person so small they cannot offer mighty comfort.  The group discussed the importance of being kind to one another and of living in peace.

Tapping into their creativity, they also created symbolic flags on clamshells
gathered on the neighboring beach and fashioned colorful peace signs to enjoy and the anniversary of 9/11 in both literary and artistic ways.
