Fire Island Students Embark on a Unique Project

Lesson involves a web cam watch of trout raising.

Throughout the year, students on the elementary team at Woodhull Elementary School will be participating in a project called “Trout in the Classroom.”

To commence this inquiry-based learning assignment, the students learned how to prepare and set up a tank.

Taking into consideration the environment required for trout to grow and survive, the students conducted research and recorded their observations in their “trout journals.”

Before the holiday break, the students introduced eggs into the trout habitat and began to study the ecosystem and food web necessary for trout survival.

Eventually, they will place the mature trout in portable containers for release into the trout streams at Caleb State Park.
Trout in the Classroom has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, language arts, fine arts and physical education.

Students are responsible for feeding the trout several times a day, monitoring and recording the water temperature and level, and ensuring the trout have what they need to survive.

Parents and the general public have been invited to view the progress via a live webcam feed streamed onto the district’s website.
