Budget Committee Meeting Dates Announced

District releases first three dates the group will meet.

With the , the West Islip School District and Board of Education will now turn their attention to the 2012-13 school budget. 

Assisting them with the process will be the first-ever Budget Advisory Committee.  According to BOE President Steve Gellar, the committee will consist of 10-15 community members.  Trustee George Smith will head the committee, Gellar said.

They'll research ways the district will be able cut spending to bring down the 2012-13 projected school budget of $114.1 million, which is a 6.5 percent increase and nearly 11 percent tax levy hike from the current budget.

Last May, despite facing a 7.7 percent property tax increase, West Islip residents easily passed the current school budget by a vote of 2,175 to 1,617.
