12 West Islip Students Accused of Using Facebook to Cheat

Group allegedly used social network to share answers to homework assignments and a biology exam.

Twelve West Islip High School students are accused of using Facebook to cheat on biology homework and an exam, according to district officials.

The ninth-graders, whose identities have not been released, have been punished by the district, Superintendent Richard Simon told Newsday.

"[The punishment is] somewhere in between a warning and out-of-school suspension," he said.

What originally began as a study group escalated into students posting answers to biology homework, lab assignments and an exam on the social media site, Simon said.

School officials learned of the Facebook page after a parent sent an anonymous letter to the biology teacher and West Islip High School Principal Dr. Anthony Bridgeman.

The page has since been taken down.
