Where Was This Historical Photo Taken in Port Jefferson?

Guess where this historical photo of Port Jefferson was taken.

This photo taken by Robert S. Feather depicts an important Port Jefferson village institution both then and now. The image was printed on a postcard from village historian Kenneth Brady's collection and dates back to the early 20th century.

Can you guess what building is in this picture? Put your guess in the comments below. Check back on Saturday for the answer.

Caggiano's,Whelan's drug store, Fred's barber shop, McCuen"s Hardware store, Links's Cleaner's,Flower Bocks,DeMico's Pizza,Station Deli,The Country diner. Thats when upper Port was part of the town, not the run down, neglected haven for the homeless, gangs & drug dealer's that it is now. And now they want to build a 4 story apartment building for low income housing. Just what the area needs to classify it as a true ghetto.

I remember the the Sabatino Bros at Whelan's Drugs...(Peter & Barbara are still there, Port Jeff Army & Navy)...and McEwing Bros. Hardware...Joe & his sister, Rose at the pizza shop..My cousin, Jim (Poulianos) Poulos had a jewelery shop by the pizza shop... Yes, i agree, for the stores that are there...It does need cleaning up.... In the late 50s...i was able to walk pass there all the down to another cousin's store.'Caraftis Bait/Boat Rentals .....Now, forget it!.....I won't think anymore of walking the LIRR tracks to the our church on Sheep Pasture Rd...never know who you will find on the way...

Thats when upper Port was part of the town ,,,,,Really?...There actually such a time?....Musta been so nice.... FYI, the proposed apt building is 3 stories and NOT (repeat NOT) low income housing...The target market group is young professionals, Stony Brook teachers, grad students....Naive as it may be, I sincerely hope that this project may actually be THE start of a true re-vitalization of UP (Upper Port).....

Mels, So glad you set that straight. I was sad to hear some of the negative comments about upper PJ. I don't think it is quite as bad as some wrote. Yes it is definately needs some TLC and the powers that be are working on that. I hope you are right that the re-vitalization being is THE start of a new UP.
