Text Power Outages To LIPA

A new program allows customers to report electrical malfunctions from their cell phones.

Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) customers will now be able to report electrical outages at their home or business via texting from their mobile devices.

LIPA’s “Power Out? Text It In” is the first program of its kind in New York State and provides customers with another avenue of communication for service interruptions. In addition to reporting outages using the texting feature, customers can opt to receive information about their outages, as well as any planned work going on in their neighborhood, via both text and email.

“I am pleased that LIPA developed this convenient program in response to the concerns and suggestions of customers and elected officials,” Legis D’Amaro (D-Huntington Station) said. “It is a smart, efficient and expedient way to disseminate the information everyone needs to keep Long Island out of the dark.”

To register your mobile number, go to http://www.lipower.org/mylipa or text REG to myLIPA (695472). LIPA customers can still report power outages through the website or by calling 1-800-490-0075.

In addition to the mobile-texting initiative, LIPA has also created new social media channels:  LIPAStorm Facebook page and @LIPAStorm twitter feed. While customers will not be able to directly report outages through these sites, they will be provided with safety and preparedness tips, power restoration updates and other important information regarding outages.

“I am hopeful that these new programs will effectively keep the lines of communications open and flowing to alleviate the frustration that many people experience during power outages,” D’Amaro said.
