Suffolk Issues Advisories For Several Islip Town Beaches

The Suffolk County Department of Health has issued an advisory cautioning residents not to use several local beaches across Islip Town.

Beaches under the advisory include Bayberry Beach & Tennis Club Beach, Bayport Beach, Benjamins Beach, Brightwaters Village Beach, East Islip Beach, Islip Beach, Lake Ronkonkoma/Islip Town Beach, Sayville Beach and Sayville Marina Park Beach.

Health department officials issued the warning because of the heavy rain that has fallen Friday and is expected throughout the evening as the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea move north.

The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing, officials said.

Health department officials recommend that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24-hour period) after the cessation of rainfall.
