Shelters Available Across Islip Town

Several facilities now open to provide warmth, food and charging stations.

As residents across Islip continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy, the Town has put together a list of shelters and outreach programs that are currently available. The shelters can be utilized by all residents, but Town officials are looking to provide assistance to those who still lack power and heat.

American Legion Post 411 
39 Nassau Avenue, Islip 
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
Effective Wednesday, November 7, and open daily between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The general public can come in for a free breakfast and/or lunch. Free ice, free cell phone charging and hot beverages throughout the day (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) will also be provided.  Tables and chairs will be set up with board games and cards. Volunteers to help staff the post are welcome. Click on the address above for directions.

Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center 
50 Irish Lane, Islip 

Thursday, November 8; and Friday November 9
12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

St. Marks Church

Every Evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

St. Joseph's College 
155 West Roe Blvd., Patchogue 

Starting Wednesday, November 7. Offering Shelter for those who need housing during the storm. Click on the address above for directions.

This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
