Reader Reaction: New State Gun Law

West Islip Patch readers share their thoughts on the state's new gun legislation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (NY SAFE Act) on Tuesday as state lawmakers tightened up gun regulations in the wake of the Newtown shooting.

The measure expands the state’s ban on assault weapons and strengthens guidelines to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. It also limits the size of gun magazines to seven rounds, down from a limit of 10.

We asked our Facebook fans how they felt about the new gun law. Here's what they had to say (be sure to add your own thoughts on the topic in the comment section below this article):

Jennifer Jesia: From what I've read, I agree with parts of it. I just don't think its necessary for the laws to be as strict as they've been made... The LEGAL gun owners aren't the ones committing crimes.

John Gulak: Its a start but I think more needs to be done. There need to be some really harsh penalties for crimes committed with guns. Especially those obtained illegally.

Jacque Fox-Thomas: These new laws will not keep guns off the street and or crazies commiting mass shootings. The only thing it will do is open the door for the goverment to take more rights away when the next mass shooting happens. There will be no shootings if everyone was armed. [sic]"

Linda Sevier Sullivan: I am relieved there is a ban on automatic assault weapons. They were made for the military not the general population. The extreme beliefs on both sides are becoming non-american. The last few massacres were done with these type of weapons by young men. The assault weapon is only one part of the problem.
