Planning Board Hearing Set on West Islip Fro Yo Shop Proposal

Applicant seeks to have parking covenant removed.

A public hearing on the establishment of a frozen yogurt shop on the northeast corner of Union Boulevard and Chestnut Street in West Islip will be held by the Islip Town Planning Board on January 23.

The project application, which had initially been on the agenda for this week’s board meeting, requests that the town to lift a covenant regarding parking placed on the property in 1994, according to town officials.

The applicant, Steven Lau, plans to open a frozen yogurt shop with seating for 10 customers. He is also applying for a special permit for a minor restaurant as well as a modification of deed covenants and restrictions, according to town officials.

In 1994 the property was rezoned from Industrial 1 to Business 1 for a retail center and at that time the board stipulated that the site conform to town parking requirements. In 1995 the board approved a special permit for a restaurant, a Chinese eatery, and approved a relaxation of parking but never removed the covenant.

The hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Islip Town Hall.
