Lindenhurst's Most-Run Stop Signs

Which ones are disregarded the most?

Some in Lindenhurst have said that the stop signs in the community are treated more like pause signs.

So, Lindy, what do you think?

Do you know of a where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?

Share where it is in the comments section, below.

To Lindy '82 - Yes, there are many stop signs in Lindenhurst, but they are there for a reason. Besides being there to make cars FULLY STOP, look all ways, then go, they are there to SLOW down speeding drivers which is the next subject. For example, the added stop signs on New York Ave. were to SLOW cars down from driving on it like it was the L.I.E. Just the other day, a sporty silver car sped going south on New York Ave. approximately 100 mph like it was a raceway. This is how people get killed. At the 4 way stop on W. John St., it was put there years ago when someone was killed at that intersection being broadsided. But people forget or don't know and look at the signs as a nuisance. Maybe the town should put up a universal sign or symbol (I believe Copiague did this) that indicates a fatality took place & this is a dangerous intersection. Also, I'd love to see signs put up that say, "Failure to make a full stop here is a moving violation that will cost $..... for first offense." Or "What is the cost of your failure to obey traffic laws in Lindenhurst? Court fines, loss of driving privileges, jail time, vehicular homicide charges. Slow down, Stop, & Obey the Traffic Laws." Beside the wreckless driving, verbal rudeness, littering, tossing fast food wrappings, cigarettes, liquor bottles out their car windows, I'm shocked at the increasing numbers of people in Lindenhurst are being arrested on drug charges, DWIs, larceny, burglaries, robberies, and assault.

Beside the failure to make full stops, I believe most of us have witnessed wreckless driving, cell phone use, teenagers fooling around in cars with loud music while the young inexperienced driver is trying to concentrate, general verbal rudeness by our fellow residents, anti friendly people, homelessness on the rise, littering in our streets, tossing fast food wrappings, cigarettes, liquor bottles out their car windows, I'm shocked at the increasing numbers of people in Lindenhurst are being arrested on drug charges, DWIs, larceny, burglaries, robberies, and assault. What can we do about this? Can Tommy Brennan start a campaign in Lindy Village or Rich Schaffer in the TOB? One one hand the TOB finally took up my suggestion back in the late 1980's to do wildflower projects on the medium of the roadways. It's breathtaking to see, but then our residents think nothing of tossing dirty baby diapers, glass bottles, styrofoam containers from fast food take-out right in front of my private residence as they tear down New York Ave. blasting through the stop signs.

I have seen her also. She is terrible. She sped around me on Shore Road once because she could not wait for me to stop at those same signs.

That is the intersection where a 47 year old woman was run down and killed within past few years.

To Barbara, editor: All of us have been to Robert Moses State Park. We've all seen the signs along the parkway towards R.M. # 5. "__ (#) of deer killed on highway this year. Don't feed the deer," or something to that effect. I'd like for Thomas Brennan and Rich Schaeffer to authorize a few signs along major roads entering into the Town of Babylon/Village of Lindenhurst along Wellwood Ave. and Montauk Hwy. If NYS takes time to save the deers. (even though they kill some of them to reduce their population) I'd like to do the same for human beings. SCPD has the statistics & #'s of those killed on Long Island from vehicular accidents. I've just applied for a FOI request in the SCPD research dept for this information which I'll present to Rich Schaeffer & Tom Brennan in the hope that we can get the town board to approve of making signs along Sunrise Hwy, Wellwood Ave., Deer Park Ave., Route 109, Great Neck Road, Dixon Ave., Route 110, Montauk Hwy etc. especially those roads that pass our school buildings - signs that state how many fatalities have occurred within the TOB due to vehicular offenses - DWI, drug use, running stop signs, blowing red lights, etc. If we can get signs posted where the fatalities took place, it might make drivers more aware as well as educate drivers of penalities for traffic violations. "Running this STOP sign will cost you $--- & --- points on your license." More to follow as I obtain statistics. Linda
