Lawmaker Reminds Residents, Storeowners: Shovel the Walks

Those who don't shovel endanger pedestrian safety and face potential civil action.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga (R-West Islip) issued a release Thursday reminding West Islip residents and store owners who have sidewalks in front of homes and businesses that they must shovel the snow off as soon as possible for pedestrian safety and to avoid potential civil lawsuits.

"A number of constituents have contacted my office to complain that homes and businesses that have sidewalks are not clearing the walks after a snow storm thus forcing adults and children to walk in the street," Barraga states in the release. "You have an obligation to clean your sidewalks after a snow storm and you should do so as quickly as possible” he adds.
