Islip Town Board Meeting Notebook

Town code changes, early retirement incentive among issues addressed

At Tuesday afternoon’s Islip Town Board meeting held at Islip Town Hall, major issues were addressed including a clarification of town code amendments made at a meeting on June 8.

  • During the public hearing segment, amendments made to the portion of the town code dealing with zoning were addressed. This clarification stems from the  aforementioned meeting, where Fire Island residents challenged the definition of Gross Floor Allowance as it pertained to them.  This item passed with no comment from the public.
  • The second issue was a zone change request from Zaid Investments in order to allow the construction of a medical office and retail building in Brentwood. This item also passed unanimously with no comment from the public.
  •  All 33 items on the meeting's agenda were passed, including authorization to clean up abandoned properties in Islip and Bay Shore.
  • Among the passed items residents should keep an eye on include a public hearing to consider enacting a local law to amend Chapter 7 of the Town Code pertaining to the use of pesticides and plant regulators on properties owned by the town.
  • Also passed was a public hearing to consider enacting Chapter 17B of the Town Code, which would be the Retirement Incentive Program for town employees.  Presented by Islip Town Labor Relations Director Robert Finnegan, this program would follow a temporary retirement incentive for employees of municipalities, signed by Governor David Paterson early last month.
  • A resolution to establish a set workday schedule for elected and appointed officials was passed as well.  This will affect those who do not follow preset hours and workdays in order to comply with guidelines for reporting service credit to the retirement system of the New York State Comptroller’s Office.

The next Islip Town Board meeting will be held on August 17 at 1 p.m. at Islip Town Hall.
