Islip to Set Hearings on Reducing Speed on West Islip Roads

Traffic code changes would impact speed limits on Higbie Lane, Udall Road.

Islip officials are considering reducing speed limits in three areas on two busy West Islip roads, Higbie Lane and Udall Road, and are slated to set public hearings on the proposed traffic code amendments at its Tuesday meeting.

The three traffic code amendments include:
  • Reducing the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph on Higbie from Montauk Highway to Udall Road.
  • Reducing the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph on Udall, from Sunrise Highway to Higbie Lane.
  • Reducing the traffic limit from 25 mph to 20 mph, from 30 feet north of Wilhelm Lane to South Street, along Higbie Lane.
All three proposed traffic code changes have been prompted by a resident's request, according to the meeting agenda documents.

Also during Tuesday's town board meeting, which starts at 2 p.m. at town hall, the board will set a public hearing on installing stop signs to control traffic north on Everdell Avenue and south on Merritt Street in West Islip. Currently there is a stop sign controlling traffic south on Everdell.

I believe Wilhelm Lane and South Street are both on Higbie Lane NOT Udall. Reducing the speed is not going to help as people are not obeying the speed limits now. Stop signs would be better. Even though people don't completely stop at stop signs they do at least slow down. Traffic lights are the best but I know that will not happen

Hi Pat, thank you so much. Yes it's Higbie.

Pat you are 100% right!! What is the difference between 35mph or 30mph when cars are going 50mph on Udall Rd. I don't agree with traffic lights. Cars will speed up when the light is yellow. Stop signs will SLOW the traffic down. A 4 way stop sign would be perfect at the intersection of Udall and Gerek/Sylvia

I live on Everdell and NO one stops at the stop signs. It's not a suggestion folks!!!!! STOP means stop.

the same people that obey 35 are the ones going to obey 30 mph. so lets know what we're talkin about. instead of the cops sitting by the fire department or behind masara school and who knows where else, why don't they make their presence noticed. maybe the kids will slow down then.
