Islip to Set Hearings on Reducing Speed on West Islip Roads

Traffic code changes would impact speed limits on Higbie Lane, Udall Road.

Islip officials are considering reducing speed limits in three areas on two busy West Islip roads, Higbie Lane and Udall Road, and are slated to set public hearings on the proposed traffic code amendments at its Tuesday meeting.

The three traffic code amendments include:

  • Reducing the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph on Higbie from Montauk Highway to Udall Road.
  • Reducing the speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph on Udall, from Sunrise Highway to Higbie Lane.
  • Reducing the traffic limit from 25 mph to 20 mph, from 30 feet north of Wilhelm Lane to South Street, along Higbie Lane.
All three proposed traffic code changes have been prompted by a resident's request, according to the meeting agenda documents.

Also during Tuesday's town board meeting, which starts at 2 p.m. at town hall, the board will set a public hearing on installing stop signs to control traffic north on Everdell Avenue and south on Merritt Street in West Islip. Currently there is a stop sign controlling traffic south on Everdell.
