Islip Issues Mandatory Evacuation Order For Category 1 Storm Surge Zones

Order also includes mobile home parks; shelters open across the Town.

Islip Town has issued mandatory evacuations for Category 1 Storm Surge Zones and all Mobile Home Parks located in the township.

Storm Surge Zone areas are concentrated in many low-lying areas south of Montauk Highway. A full list of streets and parcels impacted by the evacuation order is attached with this story. Calls will be made to residents in these areas informing them about the mandatory evacuation.

Town officials encourage residents to evacuate during daylight hours well in advance of high tide Sunday night. All evacuations should be completed by 7 p.m. Residents are also encouraged to take a minimum of three days of clothing, all medications, and baby supplies.

American Red Cross Shelter openings in the Town of Islip:

• Brentwood High School — Sonderling Center; 2 6th Avenue, Brentwood

North Directions: Take Long Island Expressway to Exit 53 (Eastbound); take exit 55 (westbound) to Washington Avenue; South on Washington Avenue to 6th Avenue; Make right onto 6th Avenue; take to end; (if you cross over Southern State Parkway, you have gone too far.)

South Directions: Sunrise Highway to Exit 44 — Brentwood Road, Take North approximately 3 miles; make left onto 6th Avenue until the end (if you cross over Suffolk Avenue, you have gone too far.)

• Seneca Middle School — 850 Main Street, Holbrook

Heading West: Long Island Expressway to Exit 61. At light turn left heading South on Patchogue-Holbrook Road.  At 4th Traffic light, turn right on Furrows Road.  Take Furrows one short block to Main Street.  Turn left and continue several hundred feet to Seneca on west side (Across from Villa Lombardi’s)

Heading East: Long Island Expressway to Exit 61. Turn right at light heading South on Patchogue-Holbrook Road.  Proceed 3 traffic lights and make right onto Furrows.  Continue as above.

• Sachem East High School — 177 Granny Road, Farmingville

From Sunrise Highway:  Sunrise Highway to exit 52A toward Suffolk County 83 (No. Ocean Avenue/-Farmingville/ Patchogue) merge onto Sunrise hwy South Service Road.  Turn left onto County Road 83 North / North Ocean Avenue.  Turn right onto Granny Road. Pass Bicycle Road and the school is on the left.

This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
