The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Small Business Administration have established a command post at 401 Main Street in Islip.
Islip Residents and small business owners can come to this post from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m, seven days a week, to obtain information and guidance through the FEMA Relief Fund application process. Several New York State agencies have also established posts that are shadowing the main FEMA command group. These officials will be in Islip indefinitely.
“Islip Town is still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. After repeated requests, we are grateful for FEMA’s decision to establish a command post in Islip Town, since they will now be at the heart of the affected area,” said Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. “Right now, with so many of our neighbors without power, without heat, and without a light at the end of the tunnel, the relief provided by these agencies will certainly make an impact.”
According to Town officials, FEMA representatives will be available to guide residents through the process of applying for federal grants. Residents should get started applying online at www.fema.gov, or via an App for mobile phones.
The Social Security Administration is also on hand to help those who are having difficulty receiving benefits, need their benefits sent to a new or temporary address, or need to replace any documentation lost in the storm.
In addition, personnel from the New York State Department of Homes and Community Renewal are on hand to provide assistance to those who may require temporary housing. Also at the command post will be the New York State Department of Health, which can provide guidance to affected residents as they move through the recovery process.
Representatives can help residents sort through issues with mold, food safety, water cleanliness, and power tool safety (including generators and chainsaws). Those in need of aid from a New York State agency should call 1-855-NYS-SANDY (697-72639).
The Department of Motor Vehicles will also be able to provide the proper forms if residents need to replace documents lost during Hurricane Sandy. Residents will be able to replace vehicle registration forms, license plates and inspection forms.
