Is 7-11 a bodega?
John July 17, 2012 at 12:40 PM
I definitely don't like the idea of a 24/7 store in the middle of a residential area. Not only would it become a hang-out for trouble it would also negatively affect those small businesses at that intersection and instead of one corner needing improvement we will have the other three with abandoned storefronts!!
Ralph July 17, 2012 at 01:12 PM
john I really dont think that would happen. I think a 7-eleven would be fine1
Dennis A. O'Connor July 17, 2012 at 01:35 PM
Right on John...I'm with you 100% We must advise everyone in the immediate neighborhood like I did last time...had over 300 people at Town Hall ...overflowing into the hallways....It definitely would impact them local businesses and create a dangerous situation for our neighhborhood with increased traffic, late night beer & coffee stops, litter & the added traffic causing a safety hazzard to all the local school children. Maybe they can even get the local bus to have a 10 minute stopover. NO 7 11 see you on the 26TH

They have good coffee!!!

I am all for the 711! You people overreact. The building there right now looks horrible! Hope it happens.

Wait, so instead of having a structure with no activity, we should put up a convenience store identical to the ones the kids at the other end of town are being found behind with heroin needles in their arm according to a cop friend who answers the calls for this? No thanks. I don't need that at this end of town too, let them figure out something beneficial to put there, or god forbid a parking lot for the other 4 strip malls right there.

How many kids have been hit by a drunk driver at the other 2 7-elevens. I grew up in west Islip. Lived here most of my life. Tired of all these caddy people fighting business that bring in much needed revenue. If you want to complain. Look at the real issue here. That is Good Sam and all it's real estate not contributing a dime to WI and its schools..
richard July 17, 2012 at 09:22 PM
Yeah ok! That happens all the time.......
Aaron L. B. Norton-Baker July 17, 2012 at 09:50 PM
Richard, How often do you need to find a kid shooting up behind a convenience store before it becomes a "problem"? I have two younger siblings, one in the middle school and one who just graduated, who have both seen drug problems in the school system. Don't tell me there aren't, I can name 2 in recent memory that were drug induced suicides, one by hanging and one by a train. Do we really need another spot for them to do things like this, a bunch of kids using recreational drugs where children are trying to get back and forth to a learning institution, and teenagers hang out near that corner late at night because of a lack of a place to go? What if a drunk driver blows the light and hits a walking group of kids? This is one issue that bothers me to no end. Let them build a gas station or some kind of service that closes at night to limit the chance of kids getting into problems. Yes, I realize its' the parents responsibility to reel their kids in, but do they even care? I see kids walking the street at 2am with their skateboards and a few friends, and drivers constantly cut that corner to avoid the light. A kid on a skateboard late a night and a car comes barreling down the road, hits and kills him? Sounds familiar...oh that's right, the other end of town had the same thing happen a few years ago.
rich July 17, 2012 at 10:42 PM
A 7-11 is going to make all that happened. Where did you groww up? YOU ARE PARONOID! they can get hit by a car anywhere and do drugs any where. I really dont think a 7-11 is going to bring all this harm to kids. Do you keep your kids in a box? what are you going to do when they goaway from you. oh they will go to 711 and shoot herion. give me a break!
Rkaich July 17, 2012 at 10:49 PM
To blame 7-11 for kids shooting up is just insane. I see plenty of kids hanging out at the Pizza place and Carvel parking lot as well. Why don't we just have a regular witch hunt and blame everyone for what there kids are doing. Kids can do "recreational drugs" anywhere. Do you not realize that another gas station will do just as well as the last few. I forgot... Rock and roll is responsable for drugs.....video games are responsable for violance .......and now 7-11 for drugs..... Sounds logical..... Keep pushing the blame on other people when there own parents are to blame. What ever happened to people taking responsibility for there own actions. Why don't we just put a curfew on driving?????
rich July 17, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Thank Rkaich Thought it was just me feeing the same way.
tina July 18, 2012 at 12:06 AM
Did you know there are a few gas stations in WI that sell beer to teens. Not a good idea. No matter what kids are going to hangout . A seven eleven will be fine!
John July 18, 2012 at 04:49 PM
I think it is in too residential a neighborhood which will DEFINITELY Affect the other local businesses like West Islip Bagel, Anthony's Pizza and Ken's Deli. All so we can have a 7-11 a half mile closer than the one that just opened on Muncey and Bay Shore Rd? We also have the convenience store on Bay Shore Rd and Udall! How many 24 hour convenience stores do we need? If you want a closer 7-11 how about one of those store fronts in the Bob's Shopping center? I realize that we do not like looking at an abandoned building but one abandoned building is better than what would happen if the 7-11 ran all the other local eateries out of business.
betski July 18, 2012 at 05:14 PM
seriously? the bagle shop in town is always crowded and there is a 7-11 a couple of doors down? anthony's pizza? 7-11 isn't known for their pizza are they? i can't believe alot of these comments are coming from my own town.
Peace of cake July 19, 2012 at 02:46 PM
I would love to know how a 7-11? is going to put Anthony's Pizza out of business??? If people prefer 7-11 frozen, sit-all-day kind of pizza to Anthony's pizza...then that's a whole other problem. Also if he is making the majority of his sales off of lotto tickets and soda and NOT pizza..then that's another problem, maybe he should make better pizza and NOT spend some much time worrying about about 7-11.
Peace of cake July 19, 2012 at 02:52 PM
On another note.....the kids in this town are using drugs and drinking underage because the parents are too focused on their own lives to notice. ( Dont even get me started on the bullying that goes on in our schools!) I Thank God my child made is through WIHS and went off to college in one piece! These kids are brutal!!----I am all for the 7-11, and for the record I live on Hunter just off of Udall Rd.
Ann July 19, 2012 at 05:05 PM
peace of cake GIVE ME A BREAK! MY Kids never had a problem. They know how to stick up for themselves. There we go again blaming kids drinking on he parents. If it was that bad you should of moved. half you parents trat your kids like sheltered babies.
Peace of cake July 19, 2012 at 05:59 PM
@ANN So you Condone bullying because your children never had a problem? They knew how to stick up for themselves? And there is the problem.....thanks for confirming it.
ann marie July 19, 2012 at 07:03 PM
I dont think it is condoning bulling peace of cake. My children dont bully or get bullied. They know how to interact with people because they are not sheltered. the commet that kids drink because their parents are too focused on themselves is way off. You know I drank in hs and i had the best parents a girl could ask for. NEVER FELT IT WAS CAUSE THEY WERE TOO INVOLVED IN THEIR OWN LIVES. Wake up!
Carla July 22, 2012 at 09:48 PM
we have 2 7-11's in West Islip. Why do we need three?
Suzanne July 22, 2012 at 10:31 PM
Because it is the ONLY business interested in completely redoing that corner that has looked like crap for the last 10yrs.
erica July 26, 2012 at 10:15 PM
It's an abandoned buidling right now anyway.. don't you think that kids would be more likely to go do "drugs" behind an abandoned building than a 7/11 which would have people coming in and out and cameras surrounding it? And maybe we wouldn't have to be concerned with Anthony's Pizza and Ken's Deli going out of business if they were actually run like proper BUSINESSES. In fact, a damn nickel hasn't been invested into either of those two stores in at LEAST 15 years. This is America.. free enterprise and survival of the fittest - competition. If big corporate America happens to force the small business man out, than the small business man should be ashamed of himself. You're all thinking of every excuse in the book... hello, we already have a 7/11 in this town and I havn't seen any rise in "teen drug use" since then..?!
mike July 27, 2012 at 12:09 AM
Couldnt agree with you more Erica.. The drug issue is way out of hand to think a 711 is going to increase it. I am looking forward for the 711 and I hope it happens.
michelle sandoval July 28, 2012 at 02:06 AM
bring it on 7-11 cant wait!!!!!!!
Gayle Amico July 28, 2012 at 02:38 AM
OK finally reading all the comments, I am not the only one who thinks that an abandoned building in the dark is more likely to have kids hanging out causing problems then a business open with people around. I actually live down the street from the Union 7-11 and actually feel safer knowing it is always open and there are people around. And by the way both 7-11's are near, delis, pizza places, chinese places, and bagel places and they seem to be doing fine. And the point of having 3 7-11's in town, really? Do we need so many pizza places, bagel places, hair salons, NAIL SALONS, chinese food, drug stores, cell phones places, supermarkets, should I go on. If they are staying in business then there is not a problem. How about worrying about all the empty storefronts that look horrible around town because no one can afford the rent on them and many businesses are moving out of town because of it! (but don't get me started on that!) or maybe you can ;)
The Crush July 29, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Amazing how the people who are in favor of 711 do not care about the deli and bagel shop.it is not the same as the traffic on union blvd. this will really hurt business and the idiots that do not obey no turn on red will kill someone. But with the crooks in govt I'm sure it will go thru, especially when no one has common sense anymore.
LIfan August 06, 2012 at 01:16 PM
ummm...wouldn't it be "big government" if they didn't let it go through? If the traffic will kill business it will also kill the 7-11...if its good for business it will help the entire area.
LIfan August 06, 2012 at 01:17 PM
true...and for any parents who are completely out of touch, the kids do the serious drinking and drugs in the woods behind Ace hardware...you know, the "V spot"...the train tressle also a favorite.
