Unidentified Man Killed by Train Near Higbie Crossing

Police are still investigating who the man was and how the incident happened.

MTA police are investigating a fatal incident in which a man was struck and killed by a LIRR train in West Islip very early Thursday morning. 

Salvatore Arena, spokesperson for the LIRR, said an eastbound train heading to Montauk hit and killed a man, who has yet to be identified.

"There has been nothing further in terms of the fellow’s identity or any conclusion about what was going on there," Arena said.  "The MTA police are still working on it."

According to a police brief, the accident occurred near the Higbie Lane railroad crossing. The LIRR train departed Jamaica at 1:05 a.m. and was set to arrive in Montauk by 3:57 a.m.

Arena said there were about 80 passengers on board and the train was delayed for approximately two hours.

He also said the man will have to be identified through dental records and results could be in by Monday.
