Tell Us: Bethpage Park After Dark?

A suspicious fire set off a blaze at a trailer near the Black Course. Do kids roam the park at night?

Farmingdale firefighters put out a relatively small fire at the foundation of trailer parked at Bethpage State Park late Wednesday.

Firefighters suspect arson was the cause at the trailer, left behind by the recent Barclays Tournament.

This begs the question: what's going on?

Any thoughts from parents and young people about what happens after dark in Bethpage State Park? Is it a known hangout for young people, or is this an isolated incident.

Bethpage is one of the jewels of the state park system. It opened in 1932 and comprises nearly 1,500 acres of open space between Farmingdale and Old Bethpage and boasts five golf courses, among other amenities.

Surely there are other hangouts for kids, but why are they out so late. And the park is patroled.

Offer your ideas and sound off in the comments, please.

John I'll agree that it's not up to Police to do a Parents job but they still need to do their job and not cry that they are overworked, under staffed or under appreciated. What we expect them to do is to be the best Police Department, and from what I know we are certainly paying for that honour.

I walk the trails in Bethpage Park a few times a week for the past many years. I can tell you for a fact that the teenage kids from Bethpage go there at night and drink and smoke weed. I have passed them several times at twilight. They are harmless as long as they don't litter. Why are people surprised teenagers are doing this? They have no place else to go. As for the fire, I would suspect vagrants, I have once or twice seen what looks like a vagrant campsite in the woods. It is not teens because their are no beer cans and the like. As for cops in Bethpage State Park... do we really need a police state? The park is perfectly safe and no weed smoker is going to bother you!

some things never change. We hung out in the park at night in the '70's. And I'm sure that kids will be hanging out at night there, in 2030.
