Police: West Islip Woman Seriously Injured in DWI Crash

Police charge North Babylon man with driving while intoxicated after Tuesday afternoon accident.

Police say a North Babylon man driving drunk crashed into another vehicle on Route 231 Tuesday, seriously injuring a West Islip woman. 

The woman, Dori Gonzalez, 39, was transported to following the accident, police said. 

The crash on Deer Park Avenue in North Babylon occurred at 5:15 p.m. when Robert Berte, who is charged with driving while intoxicated, attempted to make a left turn across the southbound lanes into the Sunset Plaza shopping center near Woods Road, police said.

Berte's 1993 Buick Century, which Gonzalez was riding in, was struck by a 1995 BMW that was traveling southbound on the road.

Berte, 50, was not seriously injured in the crash, police said.

The driver of the BMW, Chris Karayannis, 24, of West Islip, and the passenger in his vehicle were not injured, police said.

Berte was being held in jail overnight Tuesday and is scheduled to be arraigned on the DWI charge at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, police said.
