A Lindenhurst man is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident following a crash Friday night that seriously injured a Lindenhurst teen, police said.
According to police, Richard Scheuermann, 19, was riding a 2013 Apollo mini-motorcycle north on North 8th Street in Lindenhurst when his vehicle collided with a 1999 GMC Safari van in front of 120 North 8th St. at 10:12 p.m.
Scheuermann suffered severe injuries to his leg and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition, police said.
The driver of the van, Frederick Hoffman, 43, fled the scene of the crash but was arrested by First Squad detectives a short time later and charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.
Hoffman was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday. He is being held on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
