Police: Farmingville Homeowner Stabs Burglar

Alex Debono, 20, fled to Kmart after being stabbed by homeowner, police say.

A Farmingville resident didn't take too kindly to his home being burglarized Monday afternoon.

The homeowner stabbed a burglar who was attempting to flee through the backyard of the home on Cedar Oaks Avenue, police said.

The homeowner, whom police did not identify, arrived home at about 2:15 p.m. and saw Alex Debono, 20, exiting the window, police said. The homeowner grabbed a knife from his car and "confronted the intruder," who was also armed with a knife, police said.

A struggled ensued between the two men as Debono, of Miller Place, tried to flee and the homeowner stabbed Debono in the leg, police said.

Debono was able to escape after he climbed over a fence and fled to the Kmart on North Ocean Avenue, police said.

A Sixth Precinct patrol officer, Daniel Furey, apprehended Debono as he attempted to leave the store, police said. Items stolen from the victim's home, including a watch and an Xbox, were recovered in the store’s bathroom, police said.

Debono was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Debono is charged with first degree burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.

Debono is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner. "His actions were legal," police said.

How much do you think Debono is going to sue the homeowner for his medical bills? Cause, you know, that's what's going to happen next.
