Police Dog Helps Apprehend Suspect in Wantagh

A K-9 unit was called in after the suspect allegedly fled the scene.

A Levittown man was arrested early Thursday morning in Wantagh with the help of a K-9 unit after an alleged larceny.

According to Nassau County detectives, police responded to the location of Poulson Street for a larceny in progress. Police observed the defendant, Stephen M. Crawford, 44, carrying several items in his hands and he matched the description of the suspect.

Crawford fled the scene in the vicinity of Briard Street and Manchester Road, police said.

Officers conducted a search of the area and Nassau County K-9 Officer and his K-9 Thunder located Crawford hiding in the bushes on Edgerton Avenue, police said. Thunder apprehended the defendant by the lower left leg and officers placed him in custody at 5:44 a.m.

The proceeds of five GPS systems and one camera were recovered on Briard Street, police said.

Crawford is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The arrest information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

I find this comment a bit disturbing. Are you saying that a dog can do a better, less costly job than he nassau county police officers? The same officers that risk their lives everyday for the people in the community. I hope the next time you call 911 a dog shows up at your door. Fyi... Did you know that pensions only account for 3% of government spending? Why is it that when the economy is bad people want to attack teachers and police officers? One benefit of becoming a teacher or police officer is the pension. Especially since they are not making wall street salaries. Take the pensions away and wait to see the quality of people that will become teachers and police officers. Yes we pay a lot in taxes but we have some of the best school districts in the country and the safest communities. I willing to pay for that.

How does this thread go from a story about the aprehension of a thief to a discourse on police and teacher pensions? (Excuse me; ALLEGED thief for the politically correct).

dawn, i don't think lorraine was complaining about pensions, i think she was merely applauding the k9 unit and saying how she feels it is an underutilized benefit in our police force. this guy is lucky he didn't break into my house at that hour. he would have got a buckshot shampoo, not a bite on the leg.

ED MANGANO has cut the k-9 Unit, as well as every unit in the NCPD.......BTW you still pay the same in taxes......the saved money goes to hire his friends and family.

Dawn- Go BACK and READ what i wrote not what you THINK i wrote. I Said the DOG should get a pension and OT also.. and we should have MORE k-9 units. obviously Dawn you cant have a bunch of DOGs patroling WITHOUT their HUMAN partner.. This was a TEAM effort with BOTH the dog and his human partner working extrememly well together to apprehend this supposed criminal and obvious idiot. You dont just stick a dog and cop together and expect this type of team work. they BOTH worked hard to acheive this synergy and I applauded BOTH the DOG and the officer for their hard work.
