Fire Breaks Out At West Islip Car Wash

Blaze contained to the machine room, but smoke damage reported throughout the building.

A small fire that broke out at Monday evening was quickly contained and damage to the building was minimized.

The fire at the business located on Sunrise Highway just east of the Higbie Lane overpass broke out at around 5:30 p.m. and started in the building’s machine room, said Scott Harvey, chief with the West Islip Fire Department.

He reported that firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the machine room, but added that early reports indicated smoke damage throughout the building.

Harvey said there were no injuries to firefighters or car wash personnel as the business was closed for the evening.

The hazardous materials unit was on scene as a precaution since the car wash houses many cleaning chemicals, the chief said.
