A man feel asleep at the wheel and smashed into a pole in front of restaurant in West Islip shortly after midnight Tuesday, according to fire officials at the scene.
Blaise Gemellaro, an assistant chief with the , said the man was headed eastbound on Montauk Highway when his Toyota Avalon hit the pole before it came to rest atop a brick facade outside Villa Monaco.
The driver, who Gemellaro said was about 60 years old and was the only person in the vehicle, had to be cut from the car by rescue workers and was taken to to be treated for knee, back and neck injuries. He is expected to be OK.
Gemellaro said the driver told rescue workers that he had fallen asleep at the wheel when the crash occurred at the corner of Montauk and E. Bay Drive.
