School District Reacts to Death of Oquenock Kindergartner

Supt. Rick Simon said he has implemented a crisis management team following crash that took the life of John Gaffney.

On Sunday, Patch learned that 5-year-old John Gaffney, an Oquenock kindergartner, was killed in a car crash while riding with his family. 

WI School District Superintendent Rick Simon issued a statement Monday regarding the steps they're taking to provide assistance to the community.

“The West Islip School District deeply regrets the recent loss of one of our students," Simon said.  "The school district has implemented its crisis management team.  Social workers, school psychologists, and support staff will be on hand to assist students, staff, and faculty during this difficult time.”

Also, Simon said that Oquenock Principal Dawn Morrison, will be sending a letter home with students Monday informing parents of the situation and offering up assistance as needed.  

"All staff received a number of handouts from our crisis team at a special faculty meeting this morning on how to handle tragedy with children in the school and community setting."
