Crimes Nearby: Group Assaults Man

A look at incidents reported this past week by Suffolk County Police.

Suffolk County Police are looking to identify the individuals they said are responsible for assaulting a man in Huntington earlier this month.

According to police, a man was walking on Main Street between Clinton Avenue and Wall Street on June 2 at 3 a.m. when he was assaulted by a group of white males believed to be in their early 20s.

The victim, 29, of Huntington, was treated for a broken nose at Huntington Hospital.

Police Seeking ID of Mall Thief

Suffolk County Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a man they said stole merchandise from a store in Bay Shore.

According to police, a man took a Michael Kors handbag from the Lord & Taylor store at the Westfield South Shore Mall on Sunrise Highway. When a security guard confronted the man, the suspect fed on foot. The incident took place on June 3 at 1:05 p.m.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, between the ages of 22 and 30 years old, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall to 5 feet 8 inches tall, with an athletic-build.  He was wearing a purple short-sleeve shirt.

The suspect has unsuccessfully attempted to steal women’s handbags from the store several times in the past, but stopped when he thought security was watching, dropping the bags and running out of the store, police said.

Man Charged With Collecting Donations For Fake Charity Event

A Farmingville man was arrested this past Wednesday and charged with collecting donations for a charity event that did not exist, police said.

David Papik, 33, was charged with second degree Scheme to Defraud.

Police said Papik went door-to-door on Lidge Drive in Farmingville on June 19 collecting donations for a fundraising walk to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

A person who donated $10 researched the event and called police after she discovered the walk did not exist. After an investigation, officers from the Sixth Precinct arrested Papik.
