Crime Report: West Islip Man Arrested in Recycling Scheme, DWI

Incidents reported by the Third Precinct of the SCPD between August 29.

The following information was supplied by the Suffolk County Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Arrests

The Town of Smithtown was robbed of more than $200,000 by a in town for more than two years, officials said, and that amount is likely to increase.

One of those men, Joseph DeMatteo, 72, of West Islip, pleaded not guilty Thursday to a grand larceny charge. 

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota on Thursday said two employees of Medford-based garbage carter Jody Enterprises created a recycling scheme that involved collecting Smithtown homeowners' recyclable cardboard and paper and selling it to West Babylon-based DeMatteo Salvage for a personal profit.

Jennifer Hunter, of Manorville, was arrested in West Islip on Aug. 19 and charged with DWI.

Incidents

On August 23, there was a report of criminal mischief on Kimberly Place. According to police, the window of a house was broken.

On August 22, there was a report of harassment on Malts Ave. According to police, the report stemmed from prank phone calls.

On August 20, there was a report of criminal mischief on Malts Ave.
