BWI, DWI Crackdown Happening Over Holiday Weekend

Suffolk police are beefing up patrols on the road and waterways to combat drinking while driving or operating a vessel.

Motorists and boat owners are being giving a heads up by Suffolk Police that there will be increased patrols intent on combating drinking on roads and waterways this holiday weekend.

A release issued by Suffolk Police announces a “comprehensive” plan to help keep resident safe during the long weekend.

The enforcement effort includes officers from the Marine Bureau, Community Oriented Police Enforcement Units, Aggressive Driving Task Force, the SAFE-T (Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement) Section as well as standard patrols, and will include checkpoints at various locations throughout the police district.

 “Suffolk Police will be aggressively targeting those who drink and drive or operate a boat during Labor Day weekend,” stated Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy in the release. “The safety of our residents is a top priority for the county.” 

Police Commissioner Richard Dormer is a bit more blunt in his statement in the release.

“If you are going to drink and operate a car or boat, you will be arrested,” he stated. “Officers will be extra vigilant in their efforts to arrest those who choose to put others in danger by violating these laws.”
