Two Men Charged with BWI in Great South Bay

Arrests come one day after fatal boating accident in nearby waters.

Two men were arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated in the Great South Bay early Sunday morning.

The arrests come just one day after a Dix Hills man was charged with BWI during a in the area.

Michael Shear, 29, of Holtsville and Olimpio Rego, 26, of Ronkonkoma, were arrested during a routine patrol near Ocean Beach in the East Channel of the Great South Bay at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

While assisting another Marine Bureau unit with a vessel inspection, police suspected the driver of the vessel, Shear, of being intoxicated. After placing him under arrest on suspicion of BWI, the other passengers on the boat allegedly said the operators had switched positions at the helm when they spotted police.

After speaking to Rego, the original operator, and placed him under arrest as well, charging him with BWI, police said.

Shear and Rego were taken to the Third Precinct for processing and the vessel was impounded at the Marine Bureau base in Timber Point.
