Talk Back: If Not 7-Eleven, What Would You Like To See?

Tell us what you think should occupy the corner of Muncey and Udall Roads?

A recent planning board hearing has sparked new interest in the debate of the proposed 7-Eleven at the corner of Muncey Road and Udall Road in West Islip, with many residents and business owners in opposition of the project.

Though Eliot Bloom, the West Islip lawyer representing the owners of the location, said the convenience chain is the only business to show interest in the project, residents still have other businesses or uses for the property in mind.

Last year, we asked our readers what they wanted to see built at the property. Still, the majority of voters, thirty-seven percent, said they would like the 7-Eleven built.

Has your mind changed in the last year? Take our poll.

A coffee shop like the Babylon bean would be great

People will complain no matter what goes up. Put the 7-11 up and be done with it. Most likely going to happen.

A nice new moderinisatic building appropriately sized for the area with ample parking spaces which could be used for a group of lawyers, financial planners or an insurance Co. Anything but a 24 / 7 bussling 7 Eleven . We need to cut down on the local traffic not increase it. A nice coffee house would also be better than a 7 Eleven but that would also increase the traffic in the area.... As for Mr yankee fan...don't hold your breath...It a'int happening happening !

Bet it will . A buiding for lawyers and insurance co is not a good idea. Have you looked arouund town lately all the vacant spots . THANK HEAVEN FOR 7-11

I think this is a great idea. If 7-11 had agreed not to keep the store open 24 hours a day, I think there would have been a lot less opposition. I certainly don't want people hanging out near our houses all night long. There always seems to be trouble near other 7-11's during the night.

Hey Dennis what are you trying to sell your house? You are so BITTER with the store going up.
WI Mom August 05, 2012 at 06:56 PM
Laurie, dont be so naive. There are kids hanging out now behind the Udall stores til all hours of the night. Forget about the kids on skateboards and bikes during the day.

I heard a rumor that chris hillier is not going to be doing the west islip hoops club anymore after this season? Can you please find out if it is true, this man has done numerous fundraisers in this town its a HUGE loss for this community this man is one of the nicest people I have ever met
Laurie August 05, 2012 at 09:33 PM
WI Mom, true, but I'm more concerned about adults hanging around. There just seem to always be unsavory people hanging around 7-11 at night and I would prefer not to have that element near my home. If I wanted to live in a more urban setting I would have bought in a different area.

I am not selling at the moment...been here for 49 years and have a lot invested in this house....I can see the proposed site from my house....bet you are nesstled away on some side road and away from it all and just need a place tlo go when your low slurpey light comes on. If and when I sell you will hear about it !
Dennis A. O'Connor August 06, 2012 at 03:33 PM
Laurie Right on...couldn't have said it any better....know what you mean regarding that certain element at night. Don't even want one there if only for 12 hours. If they ever got in on that note I'd bet that the paperwork for a variance would be submitted immediately. Keep up the vigil....they're out there...
