Talk Back: How Do We Make Local Roads Safer?

In light of recent tragedy, community members are calling for stricter traffic control.

Following the tragic accident that took the life of West Islip teen Thomas Labetti last week, members of the community are demanding that more safety measures be taken on local roads.

A Change.org petition has been established by local resident Nanci DeLucia, urging Islip Town Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Owens make Udall Road safer for pedestrians by installing a light and crosswalk near the Sunrise Highway intersection. Within days, the petition garnered almost 750 signatures.

DeLucia also wrote a post on Patch calling for drivers to slow down and pay attention. The post has fostered a discussion on local road safety, with many readers agreeing that something needs to be done.
