My husband and his brothers talk about the fun they had at Peter Smiths. How many years has it been gone and they still crack each other up with what went on there.

And the A&P was nestled between Hamptons and the other side where E.J.Korvettes was....and Food Fair was next to that...with Jahn's at the end......I think.

The old machine gun that now sits in front of the American Legion Hall on Union Blvd. used to sit on that little triangle patch where Higbie and Udall intersected.

Who remembers Molly Mollusks....restaurant on Montauk Hwy in that little brick building across from the library.
One Price Dry Cleaner was a gift shop called Peddlers Three.

Looking back over the comments there are soo many that are too familiar. I miss Captree Bowling and the Movie theater the most. I lived near Wren Beverage, we would walk there to get the Slush ices. What was the drug store on Udall/Hunter intersection? That was a great place for school supplies too.

Does anyone remember the old Penny Street School? I went there for Kindergarten and First Grade. How about the Associated Supermarket on Bayshore Road?

Phases (though I was too young to go in there at the time). Consumers (catalog shopping!). What about that night club where Bobs is now...was it called Key Largo? It had portraits of famous singers on it.

West Islip needs more than just Doctors on Montauk Highway and Higbie lane. I mean really, look how nice Main Street in Babylon is. All we have are Doctors, Hospitals and all the traffic associated with them. Now people are selling their homes that front face side streets after getting the Town to re-zone them to commercial so more Doctors can set up shop. I think they should take down the Lagrange and turn it and the lot next to it into a park with some stores that cater to foot traffic. And while they are at it what about the marina I mean really its a dam dump and exclusive use to boaters only.

I went to Penny Street School, first, second, and my third grade there was the last year the school was open. I still remember the big tree outside the main door and our bus rides to the school. I tried to get some info on the school's history at the Library years ago and was originally told that I must be mistaken that there never was a school on Penny Street! One of the workers was kind enough to investigate and a few days later called me to confirm that she had found ONE document confirming the sale of the property.

How about the Golden Pheasant? Bands that played there - The Hassles(Billy Joel's group), Young Rascals, The Good Rats, Lesley West (Mountain) and tons of local bands!
Last stood as the Moose Lodge on Union Blvd.

Peter Smiths of course, as well as Bill's Oak Neck Inn close by, where we'd get served beers being under age.

Southgate School - at the end of Sylvia Drive / Pine Ave - There was a little woods behind it with "scary" garter snakes and a shortcut to Malts Ave... And Amato's Music, where musicians would post notices to find each other during the late 60s..
