2,000 WI STUDENTS HAVE NO BOE REPRESENTATION
WI’s 2,000 elementary students have no representation on our Board of Education. The WI BOE hasn’t had a member with elementary age children in several years. In the beginning of April the district received good news that we will receive MORE state funding than was previously anticipated, however school budget workshops have detailed even more cuts for WI’s elementary students in the upcoming school year. Some of those cuts include but are not limited to: elementary teachers retiring this year will not be replaced (approx 7). Some elementary class sizes will be at the maximum capacity allowed by the teachers’ union. How can our school district honestly believe that any teacher will be able to teach a class of 26 six year olds how to read successfully? How are 27 ten year olds in a classroom acceptable to any parent? There will be No full-time librarians (although during her budget presentation, the new head of curriculum/instruction specifically pointed out how critically important full-time librarians are to elementary education). During her presentation the new head of curriculum/instruction also stated that our district was in need of one teacher specifically for math support at the elementary schools (guess she noticed WI’s freefall on math test scores over the past several years). But don’t get excited-although the new head of curriculum/instruction is an expert on such things, professional math support won’t be happening for WI’s elementary students either. Oh, and the after school activities and clubs—well they’re all cancelled again next year too.
WI’S 2,000 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS HAVE NO REPRESENTATION ON OUR BOARD OF EDUCATION.
There are 2 BOE seats up for election this year. I urge parents with children attending any of the 4 elementary schools to represent WI’s 2,000 elementary school students by running for a seat on WI’s Board of Education. Petitions are available at District Office and are due back to District office by April 21st, 5:00pm.
