Staying Cool During the Summer Scorcher

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to have temperatures soaring into the 90s – here's how to keep cool.

Forecasts are calling for temperatures in West Islip to soar into the lower 90's on Wednesday and Thursday. With humidity building into the air, the heat index will also climb towards triple-digits, it could feel as hot as 100 degrees in the afternoon.

Ironically the warmest day so far brings with it the official start of the summer season. The soltice will occur at 7:09pm EDT.

Looking to cool down on 2012's hottest day so far? Here's what you need to know:

  • The National Weather Service has issued an Air Quality Alert for Suffolk County. The hot temperatures will create an excess of ozone in our air, which will keep polluted air from further dispursing and creating unhealthy breathing conditions. The elderly, young and ill should be kept from long periods outdoors.
  • The National Weather Service has not issued any heat advisories or alerts for either day, but we will update this as the next 48 hours continue.
  • The Town of Islip has not announced the opening of any cooling centers as of yet. Most town beaches, however, will be open, although lifeguards may not be on duty yet so take caution if you choose to go into the water.
  • Residents will have to wait a few more days to cool off at Town of Islip's pools and spray park, as they open on June 25 and 30, respectively.
  • Check out the West Islip Patch Summer Guide for ideas on activities and events to keep your mind off of the weather.
  • Wear clothing that is light in color and loose fitting – darker colors absorb more heat and tighter clothing will prevent your body from letting heat escape.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Sugar-filled drinks like soda should be avoided as they burn through your body faster when heated.
  • Take frequent breaks from any physical activities throughout the day.
  • Wear sunscreen – the excess ozone and clear skies will cause skin burns, especially for those of us more fairly toned.

Keep cool, West Islip, and check back with West Islip Patch throughout the day as we ride through our first heat blast of the summer!

I think Proposition 2 is a great idea, in the current structure you have to "call out" anRead More individual basically saying "I think you are doing a particularly bad job". Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
