North Babylon Teacher Wins Big on 'Wheel of Fortune'

John Paul Biondo, a fifth grade teacher at North Babylon's Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, spun and solved his way to $17,550 in cash and prizes on the famed game show "Wheel of Fortune," according to a Newsday report

Biondo's haul from the show, which was taped in February in California as part of the show's "Dad's Week," included a trip to Hawaii. 

“It was nerve-racking, but I did my best and it turned out to be an amazing experience,” Biondo told Newsday of appearing on the show. 

W. Islip Girls Track Team Wins Suffolk Championship

For the first time in its history, the West Islip freshman girls track team reigns over Suffolk County. 

The team recently won the county championship, a first in the program's 33-year history. 

Grade Schooler to Sing at LI Ducks Game in September

Babylon Memorial Grade School student Aubrey Alvino has been selected as one of six lucky individuals to perform the national anthem before a Long Island Ducks game during the 2013 season. 

Aubrey will make her debut during the team’s game on Sept. 11 at Bethpage Ballpark. 

To achieve this honor, Aubrey participated in a live audition process that called for her to sing a 90-second rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a panel of judges and fellow contestants. 

Signal Hill Elementary Class of 2006 Produces a Dozen College Athletes

Their high school athletic careers are now over, but for 13 members of the Signal Hill Elementary School Class of 2006, their time to shine on the field is just beginning. 

They attended the Dix Hills elementary school together and will graduate from Half Hollow Hills High School East next week. Eight of the young athletes will play Division I sports in college, four of them will play for Division III schools and one of them is headed to the big leagues. 

Star pitcher Steve Woods had committed to SUNY-Albany, but the Tampa Bay Rays called his name in the sixth round of the MLB Draft last week.
