Right Man for the Job

“You’d think we won the Super Bowl.”  Those were the words spoken by Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith following yesterday’s post game announcement by Woody Johnson.  Addressing his team, after they had just knocked the Dolphins from the playoffs with a 20 – 7 victory, the Jets owner delivered the news that Rex Ryan would be back next season as head coach.

The team’s elated reaction to the news is a fine testament to how well Rex is loved by his players.   And why wouldn’t they love him?  Rex has always been a coach to talk up the abilities of his players, sometimes to the detriment of management and the organization.  Rex also has the knack of overstating his team’s chances, often to the point of overconfidence.  Why shouldn’t they be happy?   They had just completed their first two game winning streak of the season.  One that kept them from a second straight losing season.   Well, maybe all that does not add up to a Super Bowl victory.

However, to his credit, this year the team did overachieve.  Their 8 – 8 record was far better than most preseason expectation.  But it was also the third non-winning season in a row.  Frankly, after going 6 – 10 last season the room for improvement was not that great.

Based upon this season alone, Rex Ryan may deserves another chance to fulfill his prophecy of bringing the Jets a Super Bowl Championship.  But a look at his overall body of work says:  It has been five year without results.  It has been five years of embarrassing moments.  It has been five years of big wins followed by unexplainable losses.  It has been five years without a Super Bowl Crown, or for that matter a Conference Championship, nor even a Division Flag.  It has been five years of looking up at the New England Patriots sitting atop of the standings.

Yeah, maybe Rex is the right man for the job.  After all the Jets have waited a long time for a return to the top.  What’s a few more years???
