Great defenses have great nicknames. Steel Curtain, Purple People Eaters, Doomsday, Big Blue Wrecking Crew. Each was the dominant defense of the era. Now, there is the ‘Legion of Boom’, Seattle’s top ranked defense. But how good are they and just where do they sit on the list of the NFL’s greatest?
The Seattle Seahawks defense led the league in a number of categories this past season. They allowed the fewest points (231) and fewest yards (4378) per game. They gave up the least number of big plays of over 20 yards with 36 and they lead the league in takeaways at 39. Also opposing quarterbacks could only generated a league low 63.4 passer rating against their quick, hard hitting style of play.
But where do the Seahawks stack up against the NFL’s greatest defenses? A quick look at the most important defensive statistic, points allowed per game, shows the Seahawks gave up a league low 14.4 points each week this season. However, in comparison, since the NFL-AFL merger four defenses have given up an average less than 10 points a game, with the 1977 Atlanta Falcons as the stingiest at 9.2.

If we go back to 2004, the year the NFL decided to expand the “illegal contact” rule, the Seahawks are sixth on the list of stingiest defenses. Ahead of them are the 49ers (2011), Steelers (2011, 2008), Ravens (2006) and Bears (2005). During this time other rule changes, which gave greater protection to quarterbacks, also contributed to higher scoring. Another reason for the increase in points is today’s kickers. They have a ton more leg and a much greater accuracy.
So do the Seahawks stack up with the legendary defenses of the past? Comparing different eras is difficult. However this we do know, they were the best defense in the NFL this season. And if come Sunday they are able to dominate a record setting Broncos offense and come away with the Super Bowl Crown…
