A Giants Nightmare

The best that can be said about the Giants defeat last evening is that they played hard and didn’t quit.  Down 27 – 21, Eli Manning had the Giants driving towards the go ahead score late in the fourth quarter.  But this season, unlike the finishes of the Giants two recent Super Bowl victories, there have been no magical endings.   Eli’s last pass, to a wide open Brandon Myers, was too high and glanced off the tight end hands and into those of the Chicago defender.  Game over.

It is hard to understand why the Giants, just one year removed from a Championship season remain winless.  Unlike Giants teams of the past, instead of making the big play at the right time this contingent of players have been just a step behind.  Possibly the players are content with their accomplishments and are no longer hungry.  Possibly the nucleus of the team has gotten old.  Certainly there has been an overabundance of injuries.

Whatever, the Giants need to begin an overall evaluation of both players and coaches.  Those who respond to the adversity created by a 0 – 6 start should become the core of the team.  Those who do not need to be reassessed and cut loose.  Rebuilding in the NFL need not be difficult, just look at the progress made by the Kansas City Chiefs.
