UPDATED: Kick-off Meeting for West Islip Relay for Life

Second annual community event will be held in June.

The original version of the story indicated it was the first Relay for Life event, but it is the second annual event.

The West Islip community will host its second annual Relay for Life event next June and the planning is starting this month.

So far 13 teams have signed up to participate and $670 has been raised, according to the relay's website. Those interested in supporting the effort can sign up a team, register as an individual to participate or donate to the effort without participating.
Last year's effort raised $72,000.

The kick-off meeting for the American Cancer Society fundraiser will be Dec. 10 at the high school at 7 p.m.

Relay For Life is a non-competitive overnight event in which teams of friends, neighbors, families and co-workers commit to keeping at least one team member walking around a track at all times – because cancer is a disease that never sleeps, according to information provided by the group.

Relay increases awareness of cancer in the community and raises much needed funds to benefit the American Cancer Society.  The event will be held June 21 to June 22, starting at 6 p.m. at the high school track.
