An online fundraising effort is underway to help a West Islip family travel to the Winter Olympics to see their 19-year-old son participate in the Mens Luge Team event.

Aidan Kelly, as Patch reported, is one of the youngest members of the team. USA Luge is sending its youngest team to the games with an average age of 24.6 (including three teenagers.)

His sister Morgan Sophia launched a GoFundMe fundraising campaign on December 15 in hopes of raising $15,000 for the family’s travel expenses.

Donations are at $500 with the help of 10 donors.

Here is Morgan Sophia on why the effort was launched:

Help us get to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics. My brother is a 19 year old who earned a postion of the Mens Luge Team of only 3! We want to be able to cheer him on. Please help!!!

There is also fundraiser set on January 26 at Farrell’s of Brooklyn located in West Islip from 1 p.m. to 5 pm to assist Kelly’s family to cheer him on in Sochi.
