Barraga Collecting School Supplies for Charity Backpack Program

Residents can drop off donations at West Islip Library.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga (R-West Islip) is teaming up with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to collect school supplies to donate to local children in need.

A collection box has been set up at the West Islip Library across from the main desk. Residents looking to donate can drop them off there.

The supplies will be given out to up to 500 children from nearby homeless shelters and foster care families at the annual Backpack Pirates Summer Festival on August 27 in Riverhead.

Items needed include:

  • Pocket Folders
  • Large Backpacks
  • Crayola Crayons (24 count or larger)
  • Sharpened #2 Pencils
  • Pencil Boxes/ Pencil Cases
  • Colored Pencils
  • Hard Cover Composition Notebooks
  • Black Flair Pens
  • Small Pencil Sharpeners
  • Large Pink Erasers
  • Tissue Boxes, Baby Wipes and Clorox Wipes
  • Glue Sticks
  • 3x5 Index Cards and Box
  • Glue Sticks and Bottles of White Glue
  • Thin Markers and Hi-lighter Markers
  • Calculators
  • Book Covers
  • Post-it Notes
  • Loose-leaf Paper
  • Backpacks and Lunch boxes for snacks
