West Islip Week in Review: Fundraisers and Features

Every Sunday, Patch will provide links to all the stories that were written during the course of the week

We've finally hit August, and we at Patch are excited to stroll on through summer and prepare for the fall.  High School sports are looming, as are the leafy trees and cooler temperatures.  But we can't move forward without looking back.  In case you missed it, here's what happened during the last week of a sweltering July.

On Sunday, we provided a story about the West Islip boys lacrosse team being honored at Hofstra University.  Each player was called up one-by-one during halftime of a Major League Lacrosse game and honored with a plaque.  Be sure to check out the video also.

Monday, our weekly crime report was posted, as was a list of all activities that were going down at the library for the week.  Freelance writer Jason Molinet also provided us with a look at how the Long Island lacrosse team took gold at the Empire State Games.

On Tuesday, Joseph Rizza wrote up a great story (and took awesome photos) about an Alexis Pilkington fundraiser event that was held at Cedar Beach.  Rizza also provided our weekly Tuesday gas column, where we inform residents where they can find the lowest priced gas in the neighborhood.

Wednesday, West Islip Patch welcomed our newest freelancer Brittany Berkowitz to the stage and she delivered with a feature about breast cancer survivor, advocate and activist Lorraine Pace.  Michele Antonio filled us in on the old Ford dealership property on Montauk Highway, which will now become a TD Bank.  Finally, Suffolk County police issued a release about their red light initiative for August.

On Thursday, Jessie Biele talked to the town government about a new program that could let municipal employees retire early.  Rizza reported on breaking news about a West Islip man who went missing, still not to be found.  Chris Boyle was at the West Islip Little League game where they crushed Port Washington 10-0 in the first game of the Williamsport tournament.

Friday, Ryan Harty posted a summary of a breast cancer fundraiser that was thrown at the Valenti home on the Great South Bay.  Boyle was back again to report that the West Islip Little Leaguers suffered a brutal loss to Bayport in their second game of the tournament.   And of course, Antonio provided us with her weekly History of West Islip column

Approaching the end of the week, West Islip Patch received our first letter to the editor, which we posted for all to see (we encourage as many letters as you can write).   And we also provided our weekly staple, the weekend open house directory
