West Islip Week in Review

A West Islip teacher nearly makes the cut at an American Idol audition and much more

What a great start to the new month.  Not only was it my mother's birthday on August 1 (happy birthday mom!), but it was also a super busy week in terms of news and feature stories.  And just in case you other moms forgot, there's only three weeks left until the kids go back to school.  Take this time to breathe a sigh of relief.

Monday's news began with our weekly police blotter and West Islip Public Library event listings.  Then freelancer Ryan Harty wrote a fascinating story about a West Islip teacher who won an Idol Experience contest in Disney for a chance to skip the audition line and sing for Idol judges.

Harty provided a follow up on Tuesday, but unfortunately Deanna Nicolosi just missed the cut.  Suffolk County cops sent out a warning to residents about a recent text scam affecting the area, and we provided stations where the folks of West Islip can find the cheapest gas.

A list of open job positions was posted on Wednesday, as was a profile of BOE Trustee Michael Zotto, who's looking to make drug education a top priority.  Also, Patch went on a mission to locate all the clothing drop boxes in the neighborhood.  You're welcome.

Writer Michele Antonio was on hand to cover the West Islip Symphony Orchestra concert on Wednesday night and provided a recap with photos.  Newest freelancer Amy Laviero contributed an excellent review and profile of Mama D's Italian Kitchen and another entertaining edition of Cruising Through Craigslist made the top spot.

Antonio updated her History of West Islip column on Friday with an article on the Dzus Fastener Co. Inc.  Brittany Berkowitz provided a profile on Suffolk Women's Hall of Fame member Sonia Murdock, and a story was published about a Long Island group that grades local supermarkets on their reusable bag practice and policies.

Finally on Saturday, Patch listed all of the day's garage/yard sales and our weekly open house directory.
