West Islip Library To Offer Boating Safety Course

Taught by a U.S. Coast Guard Captain, course will offer participants a New York State Boating Certificate.

Ahead of a busy boating season, West Islip Library is offering a Safe Boating Class in June.

The class will take place in two sessions held on consecutive Saturdays beginning June 1. Both sessions are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

U.S. Coast Guard Captain Richard Cloonan will teach both sessions and participants will receive the New York State Boating Certificate, which will be required for all Suffolk County boating and jet ski operators by the start of the 2014 season.

Once the law is in effect, boat operators who cannot produce a safety course certificate will face a fine of up to $250 for a first offense and up to a $1,000 fine and a year in prison upon a third offense.

The fee is $30 for adults and $25 for children over the age of 10. A check made payable to Richard Cloonan is due at registration.

Call the library at 631-661-7080 to register.
