Updated: West Islip Beach Not Closed

County says beaches listed as "closed" just haven't opened for the season yet.

CORRECTION: Despite early confirmation from Suffolk County that high bacteria levels resulted in swimming advisories being issued at area beaches, county officials now state that beaches listed on the county website simply haven't opened for the season yet.

ORIGINAL STORY: Due to elevated bacteria levels after , the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed seven area beaches, including West Islip Beach.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services Beach Monitoring Program prohibited beachgoers from entering the water at several beach in the Town of Islip Monday, including those along the Fire Island seashore.

Islip Town Beaches Closed Monday:

  • Sayville Beach
  • Dunewood Beach
  • Fair Harbor
  • Atlantique Beach
  • Kismet Beach
  • Seaview Beach
  • West Islip Beach

According to the county, beaches are closed and warnings are issued when water quality is poor and/or other conditions pose a risk to public health.
